Beauty By ADN Health / September 27, 2018 Yellow toenails can be yucky. If you see that your toenails are turning yellow, it could be for an array of reasons which includes nail polish, aging, and even an infection. Healthy toenails for the most part are a clear color and will not have significant issues like indentations, cracks, ridges and weird shapes. Though yellowing toenails could just as easily be caused by something as common as aging. That said there are many ways in which you can get rid of yellow toenails as we’ll examine in this article. Treating Yellow Toenails Caused by A Fungal Infection If you have yellow toenails because of a fungal infection, then you need to use an antifungal medication. The most common one used is ciclopirox 8 percent solution. All you do is apply it to the toenails similar as you would nail polish. You can also apply zinc, vitamin E, and a topical solution containing vitamin D-3. A study found that antibiotics like clarithromycin 400 milligrams can help to clear up yellow toenails. Though only use antibiotics if you are sure it is a fungal infection. It also works wonders if the yellow toenails are caused by a condition like pneumonia. Home Remedies for Yellow Toenails Now two of the most effective home remedies in our experience and ones which have been studied and found to treat yellow toenails is Vicks VaporRub and tea tree oil. Honestly, when we used these remedies, the studies were something we were ignorant of until we decided to write this article. There are studies which suggest that tea tree oil does not fight off fungal infection, but rather Vicks VaporRub did a far better job. Not only did it cure the infection but returned natural color back to the toenails. Visit a Doctor Now before you go on a journey to try and figure out how to get rid of yellow toenails, it would be a good idea to visit the doctor first. The doctor should be able to determine what is causing the yellowing in the first place. Also, most doctors will prescribe medication for the condition. At that point, it is your choice to either use the prescribed medication or resort to home remedies like the ones mentioned above. Honestly, we would err on the side of what the doctor prescribes since they are professionals. Final Word Yellow toenails are for the most part a sign of something that is wrong with your body. In most cases, we’ve seen it has a direct relation with aging and in which case it is normal. Though make sure always to monitor your toenails and if they are changes make note of it. If yellow toenails are caused by a fungal infection it can easily be treated. Though we wouldn’t recommend trying anything without first visiting a doctor. Fungal infections can turn dangerous if not cured in time causing bleeding, pain, thickness and swelling. So, see a doctor before you decide to do anything else.
